The Tao of Eden: Grandmother's Way to Health and Vitality for Us and for Her

I recently learned of something I just have to share with you!  It is a new movie called "Back to Eden", telling the story of gardener/arborist, Paul Gautschi, of how he, by nature, necessity and following the Creator's guidance, discovered a method for organic gardening that I do believe is one of the most significant things we can do in helping Grandmother and saving ourselves from our own undoing. It is a return to harmony and balance with our precious Earth Mother...and best of all it is simple and you can do it anywhere.

I don't know where to begin to tell you how much this movie touched me, motivated me, and inspired me.  Paul expresses his gardening teachings in biblical terms but his words and his life are also an incredibly beautiful expression of the Tao. The creators of this movie have generously put it on their website for all to watch.

You can watch it by clicking on the image link below:

(There is also a DVD available)

Note: I would encourage you to also watch the video clips found in the FAQ section on their website as there is valuable information there that is not in the film itself.

Chapter 39 of the Tao Te Ching (Stephen Mitchell Translation) says:

"In harmony with the Tao

the sky is clear and spacious,

the earth is solid and full,

all creatures flourish together,

content with the way they are,

endlessly repeating themselves,

endlessly renewed.

When man interferes with the Tao,

the sky becomes filthy,

the earth becomes depleted,

the equilibrium crumbles,

creatures become extinct.

The Master views the parts with compassion,

because he understands the whole.

His constant practice is humility.

He doesn't glitter like a jewel

but lets himself be shaped by the Tao,

as rugged and common as a stone."

Unfortunately our worldly ways have been interfereing with the Tao for a very long time.  But through the gardening principles in "Back to Eden", we have an opportunity here to correct some things...and a beautiful way to return to nutritious foods that truly nourish and sustain us as well as returning balance to Earth Mother.

"Back to Eden" points us to a path of harmony with nature.  Sure it will take time, energy and effort, but all things worthwhile do.  In the many times I have watched this film over the past week, my thoughts were: "How can I re-order my life in general to be more aligned with the harmony of nature?  How can I model my work, my character, my life to emulate the same natural order that the Earth Mother is showing us about herself?  She is so in harmony with the Tao and will show us how to be too, if we listen to the Divine within and follow her lead.

Again the Tao Te Ching says to us in Chapter 51:

"...The Tao gives birth to all beings,

nourishes them, maintains them,

cares for them, comforts them, protects them,

takes them back to itself,

creating without possesing,

acting without expecting,

guiding without interfering.

That is why love of the Tao

is in the very nature of things."

Paul has such a beautiful way of showing us that if we align our gardening methods with how nature herself does it,  the way of laborious tilling, harmful chemical laden fertilizers and pesticides, and challenges with water usage can all become a thing of the past.  In its place our gardening is returned to simple acts of tending our garden in ease and grace while being blessed by Earth Mother's abundant bounty in her response to us.

"Eden" means "paradise" or "place of pleasure". As you will see in the film, the "Back to Eden" gardens are most certainly an expression of this.  The fruits and vegetables we get in the store are picked before they are ripe and then shipped across the country.  When produce is picked this way, the enzymes and nutrients are not there.  In addition to the fact that our soil is so depleted of its minierals, it's no wonder that fruits and vegetables are so often tasteless.  In "Back to Eden", we learn how to replenish the needed minerals and return balance to the soil so that once again we can have food that is sweet, juicy, nutritious and a pure joy to eat!

In the commentary on Hexagram 61 of Hua-Ching Ni's translation of the I Ching, he tells a story between Master and student where the master reveals fundamental virtues basic to all human life that do not involve philosophical understanding. The master asks these questions of the student:

1) Do you eat well?

2) Do you sleep well?

3) Do you eliminate well?

4) Do you do well with the opposite sex?

5) Do you walk well?

These are basic to all of us for a good, normal, healthy life.

Such simple truths about life are so obvious and as close to us as our very breath.  Yet somehow in our modern world we lost our way and our connection to what is real. It is my prayer for you that these words and this film may act as a catalyst in the return to harmony with the Creator and with nature.  Our precious Earth Mother awaits us with open arms.

May you be blessed by the tao of Eden.

The following will be our Affirmation Prayer.

Find some quiet time to create inner “sacred space” for yourself.

Soft music can help…Breath of Angels,  perhaps, if you already have it.

Calm your mind, relax your body, and connect your being to God as you understand it.

I encourage you to daily read this slowly, speaking it out loud if you can.

Allow spaces of silence between each phrase of affirmation, accepting with

humility and faith that the word you speak is taking place now.

My Garden of Eden

As I focus only on my breath and the beat of my own heart,

I envision roots springing forth from the bottom of my feet,

connecting me deep into Grandmother's rich fertile soil.

I allow myself to know that my heartbeat and hers are...As One!

Whatever fears, anxieties, tensions, or negative energy I may have,

I give it to her, for she transforms it to nourish herself

and thereby nourish me in return.

I am present...I am still...

I go deep within my being to the Divine Presence that is the  breath of life within me.

Calling forth the presence of God in me and all around me,

I am aligned with the Divine Harmony...

I am aligned with the Divine Nature of God

for we are...As One.

I am God expressing as __(Your Name)__

I danced upon the spiral of life

to find my way to this world...in this form...at this time.

I dance now in my Garden of Eden.

My ideas of light are gifts to me from Spirit.

I use these ideas to create a beautiful sanctuary

where peace and love grow and flourish abundantly.

I am the master gardener and I choose wisely.

I plant the stillness of the mountain in my garden that I may know peace.

I plant the nature of water here that I may flow without effort.

Seeds of wisdom from ancient sages,

these I plant here too, that they may grow strong within me.

What I plant has firm root, that it may be easily nourished.

The light of the sun bestows its radiance upon my garden

offering its gift of clarity.

Heaven blesses my garden...

and Earth receives its blessing.

I am made whole...

As I dance in my Garden of Eden!

It is so!

As One

This song will be available for listening until the next newsletter issue

(approx. April 1st, 2012)

In selecting "As One" for the featured song for this issue, a famous quote attributed to Chief Seattle came to mind.  It says, "The Earth does not belong to us, we belong to the Earth."  How very true it is.  Just like the tiny organisms in the soil that naturally do their part to restore balance, when we stand back far enough, our perspective changes and we can see that we too are tiny organisms that are just a thread in the tapestry of the whole, and we need to do our part as well.  What happens to the Earth Mother, happens to us.  It is so critical that we come to understand how connected we truly are.  It is time to find our way back to a relationship with her that restores balance and harmony.  We truly are "As One".

Since recording this song many years ago, I have come to understand that thinking we are healing her is a bit arrogant.  She is going to take care of herself...shaking her back or whatever she needs to do.  It is mankind that truly needs the healing and it is mankind that is facing the demise of his own making. Earth Mother knows what to do to balance herself and she is doing it.  As a human being, your protection is to align with her, to align with the Creator....and connect with your heart...as one.  Below are the slight changes in the lyrics that I sing today.  The changes are in bold type. It is a small change but a big difference!

As One

As one we walk this earth together

As one we sing to her our song

As one we love her

As one we heal with her

Her heart beats with our own as one.

As one we join with her our mother

As one we feel her sacred song

As one we touch her

As one we heal with her

Her heart beats with our own as one.

I had hoped to have the new album released this month, but I'm way behind with mixing and mastering.  As the Tao Te Ching says "Forcing a project to completion, you ruin what was almost ripe."  I'm taking that to heart.  So like a fruit must be ripe to have all of its nutrients and flavor, the album will be born in its own time as well.  More lessons on patience :-)

Recently a website visitor had trouble accessing the shop area.  At it turns out there was definitely a problem.  As far as I can tell it's all fixed now.  But sometimes technological problems can be like trying to grasp the wind!  If any of you are experiencing problems accessing the shop area, please do let me know immediately and we'll get it figured out.

As with the case of the person who contacted me, I really don't know how long the problem had been going on. So if you ever experience any problems with the website please do let me know.  It really helps a lot.  Thank you :-)
