Beyond Words:  Returning to the Presence

Above are some pictures from my public activities in Israel this month. I hope you enjoy them!  Before I left on my journey, I was contemplating what to write for this newsletter. I was at the same time contemplating this important sojourn.  I had been asked by the US Embassy to speak/sing for  a group called "Beyond Words".  They describe their mission this way:

"Beyond Words (BW) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to promote the empowerment of women, the healing of emotional wounds and traumas and the undermining of prejudice as a path toward building peace in Israel."

So my contemplation was also about the question in my mind of "What is the message that I am to bring to these women?"  The answer began to take shape in my heart in a profound way.  So I decided to use this newsletter to carry the same message to you and at the same time it would become a way to focus my thoughts and energy in preparing for my journey.

This is a sacred time...a "Wakan" time for our earth mother and for all of us as we are a part of her.  So what is "A Wakan Time"?  "Wakan is the Lakota word used for "sacred" or "spirit".  We say "Wakan Tanka"  for "Great Spirit".  "Wakan" (sacred)  Tanka (which means "big")..."Big Sacred" or "Great Spirit".

To break it down further, "Wa" signifies movement or motion and "kan" means "nerves" or "veins".  "Kan" represents that which carries your life force.  So together they mean "to make connection" and this translates in English to "sacred".

I want you to hold your hand in front of you and simply contemplate as you gently close your fingers into a fist and then open again. While repeating this movement think of what we have just described "Wakan Tanka" to be, understanding that the real "you" is the force moving the hand.  The real you is "Wakan Tanka"...the force behind and flowing through the individualized expression you call yourself.  Sit silently in the presence of this truth about yourself.  It is also the truth of every other living being.  This is our connection...our true connection.

Imagine sitting in a room in a circle of other people.  All of you moving your hand in this way and understanding that the force that moves each person's hand is the same is one...we are all one in this way.  We are connected because we are this same life force.  Though we appear separate in our human form, we all have this sacred energy..."Wakan" flowing through us.  This "Wakan" energy is the true understanding of the broadest love.  I have said before that although we express love through feeling, genuine love is not a is far beyond human emotion.  This is what I meant.

Another word we can use here is "Tao", although in all examples we have mentioned here, we are only fingers pointing to the truth. Because the true "Tao", the true "Wakan Tanka" cannot be can only be experienced!

We can use music to help us experience this "connection".  Music opens pathways to higher states of awareness.  Music bypasses the ego part of the brain and helps us to bridge our connection to the Divine.  Music as a means of Divine worship creates a bridge between our deepest knowing and the world of the unseen.  Music in this way helps us remember where we come from.  Music is the language of Spirit.  In the Lakota tradition the holy people are known as "singers" and all sacred ceremony is centered around music.

The understanding of music as the language of Spirit was never more clearly demonstrated for me than when speaking/singing to another group...a group of young Arab and Jewish students at Zfat College who were studying sociology and cultural diversity.  With this mix of cultures there was a need to translate what I was trying to express and explain to them.  Sometimes it can be a challenge to connect with young people of your own language, let alone the language barriers in this situation.  But the moment I got up and had them form a circle to do a "round dance" with me as I that moment we connected.  We did a song from the "Calling the Sacred" album called "Sacred Being of Light".   This song includes a simple chant that is a call and answer, which made it much easier for them to get involved.  We did this song and another one that will be on my new album.  The song is called "All of Life is a Circle".  It was music and dance that connected us beyond what words ever could.  We went beyond talking about oneness to experiencing oneness through music and movement with each other.

May you find your way to moving beyond words and intellect to simply experiencing the oneness with the Divine that you already being in the Presence with your own Divinity with a new found awareness

Go beyond words and return to the presence...

To go beyond words and practice the Presence, focusing on words even in a meditation seems a bit counter productive.  So where do we begin?  As we discussed in the last newsletter, the starting point and our "True North" in returning to the Presence is in coming to stillness.  But when we are so hyped up in overdrive we may first need to quiet the body before attempting to quiet the mind.  Take a leisurely walk, do some yoga, pilates, chigong or t'ai Chi.  Slow movement...breath deeply and let go of all the stresses of the day remembering that the real you is the force and intent moving your body.

When you are ready, sit in a comfortable position with your feet on the floor and your back straight (it can be supported) and your hands in your lap.  Close your eyes, relax, and simply breath.  As you do so, focus only on the rise and fall of your chest or belly. Focus only on this movement of your breathing.  Sit quietly doing nothing but this.  Try to remain perfectly still as you allow your body and your mind to come to quiet.  If thoughts arise, simply observe them.  Label them if you wish, then just let them go as you gently return your focus to your breathing (use general labels such as thinking, emotion, itching, pain, etc).

Try to do this first for short sessions of 10-15 minutes gradually increasing your time to 30 minutes to an hour or whatever is comfortable to you.

Doing this once or twice daily will greatly enhance your awareness and your ability to be present to your Divine Self.

Though I haven't had time yet to get anything to YouTube, a nice lady named Debra had posted this one and shared it with me.  It just happens to be the song we were discussing here, "Sacred Being of Light" from Calling the Sacred.  We sure had fun singing it:-)  The person you see in the video with me is Neta from "TANKA" who, along with her husband Larry are the wonderful people who hosted this amazing journey.  Thank you Neta and Larry!  Pilamayaye!

If you click on the Prayer Request button below you will notice that the form that was on that page is no longer there.  It s unfortunate that there are aggressive individuals in this world that insist on abusing prayer form pages such as this.  It is due to this abuse and aggression that I have finally decided to remove the request form part of the page.

Please know however that the intent of your heart is still heard and prayers are offered daily for all who come with a sincere request.  If you feel the need to contact me with your request you are certainly welcome to do so.  On the Prayer Request page the "Help Me" song is still there and is a good way to align with the intention of your heart. Use it to strengthen your faith that your prayers are heard and are being answered according to Divine Will.

Thank you for your continued support of this website as a vehicle to nourish the spirit of the people.
