What Do You Do With An Anger-Eating Demon?

"Wind blowing over water disperses it, dissolving it into foam and mist.  This

suggests that when a man's vital energy is dammed up within him,

gentleness serves to break up and dissolve the blockage."

Hexagram 59 I Ching (Wilhelm-Baynes)

In preparing for this newsletter, initially I couldn't quite wrap my mind around a topic.  Once in a great while when this happens, I will turn to the Sage (I Ching) and ask a question.  The question was "What do my subscribers need to know?"  The response was hexagram 59 (Dispersion), first line moving to Hexagram 61 (Inner Truth).  This is about dissovling and dispersing divisive egotism to get to inner truth.

The first line is about overcoming disunion in its initial stages before it has become complete...before hidden divergences in temper make themselves felt and lead to misunderstandings.  In the first line of hexagram 61, it addresses secret designs that are disquieting.  This goes hand in hand with the first line of hexagram 59.  Let's look at these secret relationships for a moment and what we mean here:

Let's say you have a friend and you are one way with them, but underneath it all you have some quite different feelings going on.  Your inner relationship is not the same as the outer one you are expressing to them.  Or maybe they are doing this and it is you experiencing the disquiet that it brings because you know "something's up" but you don't quite know what it is.  It can be very disconcerting.  Because of this perhaps you too begin to develop your own "secret relationship" with them because you aren't happy with their behavior.  So many times this can come up around boundary issues and the lack of sincerity with yourself as well as the other person in regards to those boundaries.

It is this divisive egotism from either or both sides that, if not addressed and dispersed, can lead to misunderstandings, disunion and distrust.  So, what I am saying here is "get honest"!  Get honest with yourself and get honest with them. Sometimes this can be frustrating if the other party is just not willing to go there and get really honest.  But what can you do?  You can't control them no matter how clearly you may see it all.  The only person you can really correct is yourself and getting honest may mean having to accept that they simply are not willing to meet you there.  Getting honest may mean having to meet the demands of the time and change the relationship.

The times we live in can be intense and draw up within us strong emotional responses to the situations we face.  Strong negative emotions can be so uncomfortable that all we want is for them to "GO AWAY"! Either that, or without realizing it, we identify so strongly with the emotion that we can no longer discern that we are not our emotions.  We have them, yes, but to be healthy, we cannot allow them to be the boss of us.  When we are in the throws of strong emotion, it can certainly feel like we are not in control of anything.  So what are we to do?

Acceptance is the key...embracing where we are and what we are feeling and what the truth actually is.  But telling those emotions to "get out" or allowing them to "be our boss" are not effective solutions.  So what is an effective solution? The answer lies in what at first may seem totally unacceptable to our egos!  The answer lies in making friends with our emotions.  Whatever that emotion is, invite it to dinner, so to speak.  The point is to let go of resistance and genuinely make friends with the uncomfortable feeling to the extent that if it never went away it would be ok.  Now that's a tall order!  The same is true for pain as well, but we have to be genuine in our intent.  There is a story that was told by the Buddha about the Anger-Eating Demon.  This is a modernized version of the story as I have heard it told by the Venerable Ajahn Brahm.  It goes something like this:

The Anger-Eating Demon

Once there was an emperor who had to go away from his kingdom on business for a period of time.  While he was away a large, ugly, disgusting, vile monster entered into the palace and plopped himself upon the emperor's throne.  Everybody screamed at him "get out!".  They started yelling at him, throwing things at him, and abusing him in countless ways.  But with every insult this horrible monster grew an inch in size. He became more ugly, more smelly and more disgusting.  He grew and grew until he was so huge, he filled up the entire palace!

Finally the emperor returned.  As he entered the palace and saw the demon, he knew exactly what to do. Quietly, calmly, the emperor spoke.  "Welcome." he said.  "We are glad you are here.  Would you care for a cup of tea?  Would you like a foot massage perhaps?  How about a pizza?  Monster size of course!"

With every kind word, the monster shrank an inch.  The people in the kingdom took the emperor's lead and began to treat the monster with kindness.  He continued to shrink with every kind word and deed until finally he disappeared completely!

And that is how the horrible anger-eating demon was removed from the emperor's palace.

When we first begin to practice kindness and gentleness in this way (welcoming our anger, for instance, for it to stay as long as it likes), it is hard to believe that this could possibly have a positive outcome. But the I Ching gives us the same guidance as well.

Hexagram 59 (Wilhelm-Baynes translation) says "Wind blowing over water disperses it, dissolving it into foam and mist.  This suggests that when a man's vital energy is dammed up within him, gentleness serves to break up and dissolve the blockage."

This hexagram has a double meaning.  It speaks first to the image of wind over water with the idea of breaking up and dissolving ice and rigidity.  Secondly it points to the task of re-uniting.  In human terms this is accomplished through religious forces to overcome the egotism that causes separation and isolation.

Celebrations and sacrificial feasts and rites give expression to this.  The text says, "The sacred music and the splendor of the ceremonies aroused a strong tide of emotion that was shared by all hearts in unison and that awakened a consciouness of the common origin of all creatures!"

It is time for us to unite and celebrate a new dawn...a new beginning that is in it's birthing process.

May you make friends with your emotional nature and through gentleness shrink your anger-eating demons until all that remains is peace.

Our Meditation Time

In meditation, it is important to first devote some time to the body, allowing it to relax, adjusting your position to get as comfortable as you can.  I suggest doing this first before turning your attention to the breath.  One useful technique is to send compassion and kindness to any part of the body that is uncomfortable or in pain.  Another tool is to think of the most peaceful time you can ever remember...one of those times that you were blissfully still and quiet.  For a few brief moments try to remember it in detail to recall what that felt like...then let go of the memory and just be with the sense of stillness that remains.

Sit in a comfortable position with your feet on the floor and your back straight (it can be supported) and your hands in your lap.  Close your eyes, relax, and simply breath.  As you do so, focus only on the sensation of breathing in and breathing out.  Focus only on this movement of your breathing wherever it seems to be in your body.  Sit quietly doing nothing but this.  Try to remain perfectly still as you allow your body and your mind to come to quiet.  If thoughts arise, simply observe them.  Label them if you wish, then just let them go as you gently return your focus to your breathing (use general labels such as thinking, emotion, itching, pain, etc).

Try to do this first for short sessions of 10-15 minutes gradually increasing your time to 30 minutes to an hour or whatever is comfortable to you.

Doing this once or twice daily will greatly enhance your awareness and your ability to be present to your Divine Self.

The Weaving

From  The Weaving

This song will be available for listening until the next newsletter issue

(approx. June 1st, 2013)

As we stated from the text of the I Ching, "The sacred music and the splendor of the ceremonies aroused a strong tide of emotion that was shared by all hearts in unison and that awakened a consciouness of the common origin of all creatures!"

The lyrics to this song align with the text of The Image of Hexagram 59:  "The wind drives over the water:  The image of dispersion...the task is to preserve the connection between God and man and between the ancestors and their posterity".

"The Weaving" has always been one of my favorite songs to perform just for this reason.  I love it when all hearts are united in singing, dancing and celebration!  Below are my original artist's notes and lyrics from the album, so sing along and fly with me as we weave a tapestry of light and peace!

Enjoy :-)

THE WEAVING

Artist Note:  May the warm winds blow over the waters of the soul of humanity,

dissolving and dispersing the hardness and rigidity of egotism that

has brought us such isolation and separateness

May we each become a thread in the tapestry of

unconditional love, enfolding the Earth Mother,

and bringing a lasting peace that endures

for the generations to come...

Wind on the water stirring me deep

I hear you calling my soul

Ancient ones nearing ...mysteries they keep

What secrets this time will be told

Grandmother Spirit, I feel you here

Gently guiding this flight

Softly you whisper...we spin and we spiral

To the center...the center of the light

Oh, softly you whisper...we spin in a circle...

To the center of the light

Weaving the patterns more ancient than time

Sparkling crystal dreams

Ho! Sacred fabric, eternal flame

From the center is now manifesting

Grandmother Spirit, I feel you here

Gently guiding this flight

Softly you whisper...we spin and we spiral

To the center, the center of the light

Yes, softly you whisper...we spin in a circle...

To the center of the light.

Weaving, weaving, we are weaving Ah...Ah...Ah

Weaving, weaving, we are weaving Ah...Ah...Ah

Ah, Ah...Ah, Ah, Ah, Ah, Ah...

Ah, Ah...Ah, Ah, Ah, Ah, Ah...

Weaving, weaving, we are weaving Ah...Ah...Ah

Weaving, weaving, we are weaving Ah...Ah...Ah

On the earth, love now is flowing

Hearts are open wide

Like the warmth of a blanket we are enfolding

Earth Mother in the healing light

Grandmother Spirit, I feel you here

Gently guiding this flight

Weaving the patterns more ancient than time

Behold the wonders of this night

Softly you whisper ...we spin and we spiral

To the center, the center of the light

Yes, softly you whisper...we spin in a circle

To the center of the light

Behold the wonders of this night

Weaving the patterns of the light

Weaving, weaving, we are weaving Ah...Ah...Ah

Weaving, weaving, we are weaving Ah...Ah...Ah

Ah, Ah, Ah, Ah, Ah, Ah, Ah...

Ah, Ah, Ah, Ah, Ah, Ah, Ah...

Weaving, weaving, we are weaving Ah...Ah...Ah

Weaving, weaving, we are weaving Ah...Ah...Ah

Ah, Ah, Ah, Ah, Ah...Ah, Ah, Ah, Ah, Ah...

Ah, Ah, Ah, Ah, Ah...Ah, Ah, Ah, Ah, Ah...

Ah...Ah...Ah...Ah...Ah...Ah...Ah...

Ah...Ah...Ah...Ah...Ah...Ah...Ah...

Ah, Ah, Ah, Ah, Ah...Ah, Ah, Ah, Ah, Ah...

Ah, Ah, Ah, Ah, Ah...Ah, Ah, Ah, Ah, Ah...

Weaving, weaving, we are weaving Ah...Ah...Ah

Weaving, weaving, we are weaving Ah...Ah...Ah  (fade)
