Do Words Matter?

Sometime ago I had a phone conversation with someone I had just met.  One of the first things he said to me was that he didn't give much value to words. I understood what he meant in the context of our conversation, which was that it is about the intention and energy behind the words and not the words themselves.  He went on to say that people can use words to hold "power" over someone.  This is also true.  We see it all the time in things like what I call "bankese", "legalese", etc.

It also happened that a short time after this conversation I was going over a legal agreement I needed to sign for a business venture.  Again it put me looking at "words".  I have been in enough legal agreements over the years to know that a piece of paper is not going to hold someone to their word.  The same is true for marriage.  If the foundation of your marriage is based on forcing someone to hold their word, you are already in trouble!  It seems most of our words/contracts end up being things we can't possibly live up to thus the reason they are so often broken and the reason we end up with such major trust issues, all pointing back to those words!

As I went into detail about in Vol. 28, "The Now Tao of Commitment", there are four important tenants in the understanding of what true commitment is:

1) Commitment (our word...our intention) must first be to ourselves.  Our commitment must be to the truth always and above all else.  We are committing to ourselves to be with the other person based on the truth of our being and the truth of "what is" regarding the relationship.

The other three elements are actually contained within the first one:

2) The commitment to a shared reality.

3) The commitment to communicate openly and honestly.

4) The commitment to build on the affinity that brought you together in the first place.

So why do I go to such lengths to say all of this?  The answer to that question begins with my efforts to reduce clutter...reduce "possessions".  As I began to reduce the amount of clothes in my closet for instance, I began to observe the "criteria", if you will, that I was using that caused me to leave certain items hanging there, saying "but I love that" yet never wearing it!  I observed the dialogue in my mind that was going on and saw the attachment.  I saw that the criteria that I was using was not working.

So I asked a question of the I Ching: "What is the criteria I should use to determine which possessions to let go of?"  Now in retrospect I could have possibly asked a better question.  However, there are times when the I Ching will respond to the bigger issue at hand and I saw immediately that this was the case.

In the I Ching's response to me in hexagram 61 (Inner Truth), I was shown that the "criteria" should be my inner truth.  It should be what my intuitive guidance was telling me: "create space".  The criteria should be to create space in my life and in my mind, rather than how to let go of the possessions I had been so focused on.

Then the Sage (I Ching) went on to show me a most profound truth that I was able to apply "across the board" to all areas of my life.  In line three (Wilhelm Baynes Translation) it says (stated here in the feminine): "Here the source of a woman's strength lies not in herself but in her relation to other people (in this case in relation to her possessions).  No matter how close to them she may be, if her center of gravity depends on them she is inevitably tossed to and fro between joy and sorrow." (i.e. the "do I keep that item or not??" dilemma)

When I began to look at possessions in this light, it changed everything.  Another layer would be understanding that your thoughts, beliefs, words, memories, (you fill in the blank________) are also your "possessions" and can be applied here.

In chapter 13 of the Tao Teh Ching (Ni Hua-Ching Translation) it says:

Favor and disgrace are both causes of shock.

When one is favored, one is shocked.

When one is disgraced, one is also shocked.

That is because people forget the unadorned plainness of universal life.

If they knew this clearly, then what is meant by saying that favor and disgrace are both causes of shock?

Favor is no higher than disgrace."

Example:

If someone praises you, you take it in...you like it...you take it personally, it "feels" good.  You give yourself to it...you "possess" it.  Or maybe that should be "it possesses you"!  If that same person some time later disgraces you, you take it in...you don't like it at all...you take it very personally and it "feels" terrible.  You still have given yourself to it and this time it really does feel like it possess you!  You lost your center of gravity and it shocked you either way.

If you remained detached and hold on to your center in the beginning, you know that what that person said, good or bad, is really not about you.  If you keep your center of gravity you never lose yourself to another.  Again repeating the message of line three of hexagram 61:

"Here the source of a woman's strength lies not in herself but in her relation to other people (in this case in relation to words of another person to which you attached yourself).  No matter how close to them she may be, if her center of gravity depends on them she is inevitably tossed to and fro between joy and sorrow."

Other Hexagrams that relate to the importance of words:

In the Image of Hexagram 37:  "Thus the superior man has substance in his words and duration in his way of life...the influence on others must proceed from one's own person.  In order to be capable of producing such an influence, one's words must have power, and this they can have only if they are based on something real...words have influence only when they are pertinent and clearly related to definite circumstances.  General discourses and admonitions have no effect whatsoever.  Furthermore, the words must be supported by one's entire conduct...only firm and consistent conduct will make such an impression on others that they can adapt and conform to it.  If words and conduct are not in accord and not consistent, they will have no effect.

Hexagram 52, line 5: "Keeping his jaws still. The words have order. Remorse disappears."

A man in a dangerous situation, especially when he is not adequate to it, is inclined to be very free with talk and presumptuous jokes.  But injudicious speech easily leads to situations that subsequently give much cause for regret.  However, if a man is reserved in speech, his words take ever more definite form, and every occasion for regret vanishes."

So yes it is true that the energy, the intention behind the words we use is important. But we must be clear in our use of them.  Don Miguel Ruiz speaks to this in his book "The Four Agreements" and again also in "The Fifth Agreement" because words themselves are but symbols to the meaning we have given them.  Because they are symbols we must be impeccable in our use of them.

I am given lyrics to my songs by Spirit, but always it is the energy behind the words and the vibration itself that is most important.  "In the beginning was the word (the vibration)..."   That is why I so enjoy creating songs with chants and vocables.  They are easy for us all to sing along and it immediately moves us beyond the intellectual exercise of words and bridges the pathway of our connection in the realm of oneness.

So what do you think?  Do words matter to you?

Still Water Meditation

It is said that the real music is the silence between the notes.  Your essence is in the silent space between the thoughts...between the words.  Let us go there now...that the words we do use may have clear intention.

Passage to the Earth Mother

FIRE PRAYER

This song will be available for listening until the next newsletter issue

(approx. August 1st, 2015)

I chose "Passage to the Earth Mother" from Fire Prayer because I remember what took place in the studio on the day I recorded it.  The producer said "just start chanting".  I had no plan...no idea what was about to come out of my mouth.  I only knew that my heart was full of an intense love for our precious Earth Mother.  May you go on this journey with me as you listen.

Know that I have that broadest love for you too...
